His buildings, furniture, writings proved challenging at inception, are considered visionary now, more than a half-century since. Archives at Yale University and Cranbrook Academy of Art were made available for research and exhibition including some previously unseen pieces of work. Eschewing a particular style in his architecture, Saarinen’s insistence that every problem was different and thus required a unique solution allowed for adventurous experimentation, often with sculptural ambition resonant of human experiences. This project’s identity and collateral were developed using Saarinen’s insight to create visual forms and relationships informed by his architectural rhythms, forms, and spatial deftness. The visual language was ever-present and ever-changing piece to piece, responsive to the needs and purposes of each iteration. The media kit could be deployed as a complete system, or, individual pieces could stand on their own. Led by Masamichi Udagawa and Sigi Moëslinger, Antenna is responsible for much of what we encounter in the NYC subway system, the LinkNYC hubs aboveground on the streets, and in Knoll-furnished offices and workspaces. Their presence and ‘broadcast’ is wide and varied, precise and rigorous. Antenna’s identity is based on ideas of ‘transmissions’; the ethereal and the substantial informed by poetic ambiguity—inscrutable at first but with thoughtful engagement reveals nuances of connectedness and rhythm found throughout the studio’s process. The studio books are housed in clean white spaces, punctuated with small silver silhouettes of their projects as categorical notations along a timeline. The property’s design vocabulary informed every aspect of the marketing materials which contextualize the design within the historic fabric of the Upper West Side, and translate it into a similarly nuanced visual and a high-touch tactile experience.
